Georgia Peanut Commission traveling to the Classic City to promote peanuts

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission will be traveling to Athens, Georgia, this upcoming weekend to promote peanuts during Homecoming weekend at the University of Georgia. While in Athens, GPC will pass out koozies adorning the Georgia Peanuts logo, as well as its famous little red bags of peanuts to football fans and Athens-area residents, alike.

Georgia peanut farmers announce new website to answer peanut allergy questions

TIFTON, Ga. — As the school year gets underway, many districts face challenges in how to best manage peanut and other food allergies in a school setting. While more than 98 percent of children in America can safely enjoy peanuts and peanut-containing foods, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, managing food allergies — particularly in schools — can often be an emotional and contentious issue.

New peanut revenue policy introduced for farmers

TIFTON, Ga. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced a new peanut revenue policy that will be available for eligible peanut producers. The new policy approved by the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC) Board of Directors, on Thursday, Sept. 19, offers a new revenue based insurance coverage, previously not available for peanut growers. The USDA’s Risk Management Agency will now be able to make the program available to producers for the 2015 crop and will allow producers to ensure not only against yield loss but also against reductions in revenue.

Georgia Peanut Tour set for Sept. 16-18

Tifton, Ga. — The twenty-eighth annual Georgia Peanut Tour will be held Sept. 16-18, 2014, and centrally located out of the Savannah, Georgia area. The tour brings the latest information on peanuts while providing a first-hand view of industry infrastructure from production and handling to processing and utilization. Tour stops will be made in several peanut producing counties including Bulloch, Burke, Screven, Tattnall and Toombs.

Tifton, Ga. — The 2014 Plains Peanut Festival kicks off Sept. 27 with a street dance, parade and lots of peanuts. The festival is held annually in Plains, Georgia, home of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

American Peanut Research and Education Society honors Murphy

Tifton, Ga. — Emory Murphy of Tifton, Georgia, and retired assistant executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission was recently named a Fellow by the American Peanut Research and Education Society in San Antonio, Texas, on July 10, 2014. Becoming a Fellow is the highest honor provided by the society. Eligibility is attained by being an active member of the society for at least five years and the nominee must have made outstanding contributions in research, extension and administration during their career.

Georgia Peanut Commission promoting peanut consumption to consumers through major sporting events

TIFTON, Ga. — Throughout the month of August and this upcoming fall, the Georgia Peanut Commission will be sponsoring peanut promotional advertisements with major sports teams in north Georgia. Thirty second and 10 second promotional messages will air on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network, which has approximately 3.5 million listeners per week throughout the Southeast. Also, a 30 second promotional message will air during the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech football season through IMG, where up to 56 radio affiliates will broadcast the message.

Georgia Peanut Commission opposes the sharing of grower-funded technology with producers in other countries

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission board of directors unanimously approved a motion opposing the sharing of grower-funded technology with other countries in direct competition with domestically produced peanuts. Peanut industry donates peanuts and peanut butter to tornado victims

TIFTON, Ga. — Peanut Proud and the Georgia Peanut Commission loaded 20 pallets (28,800 jars) of peanut butter today to send to families affected by the recent tornado disasters in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. Donations were made by Kroger, American Blanching, as well as Peanut Proud. An additional truckload is scheduled to ship next week. Georgia Peanut Commission increases funding for research projects

TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) board of directors has approved $293,780 in new research project funding for the 2014-15 research budget year. This action was taken during the commission's March board meeting. The Georgia peanut industry plans to celebrate by hosting the 2014 Georgia PB&J Day at the Georgia State Capitol in  Atlanta, Ga. TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Peanut Commission now has a 3-D video featuring Georgia peanut production available at its headquarters off of Interstate 75 in Tifton, Ga.
